Adding an AR-10 to Your Collection
As an integral part of firearm history, the AR-10 is considered the precursor to the AR-15 style we all know and love. First developed in the late 1950s by Eugene Stoner, the AR-10 is sometimes forgotten as its younger brother tends to rule the AR platform when it comes to popularity. But the reality is, the AR-10 has some pretty sweet benefits that could add to your collection.
AR-10 vs AR-15: Key Differences
Similar but different, the modern-day AR-10 will differ from your AR-15 with key structural and performance factors to consider.
Caliber is the first, and probably the most obvious difference between the two. Some of the most common calibers for the modern AR-10 include 308 Winchester (7.62x51 NATO) and 6.5 Creedmoor while AR-15s will mostly be chambered in 5.56mm/.223.
The calibers are what will lead to some minor, but notable performance differences including the AR-10's heavier weight and limited magazine capacity (results from the AR-10's heavier ammunition). The powerful round and lower muzzle velocity in an AR-10 will also prove a flatter trajectory and longer effective range.
The overall size and mechanics will rack up a higher cost compared to an AR-15 option, one of the many reasons the AR-10 is less popular. AR-15's close combat and tactical benefits are some more of those reasons, but with longer effective ranges and quality performance, there's no doubt an AR-10 is a fun build and a great rifle option.
With all these performance considerations, why and when should you use an AR-10? Using Winchester .308 rounds, the standard NATO 7.62mm round, or even 6.5 Creedmoor, you’ll find the heavier ammunition ideal for long-distance shooting.
An AR-10 will serve in a few main areas including competition shooting, military snipers, and is especially reliable in hunting large game. So, if you're looking for more stopping power, range, and a unique firearm, the AR-10 could and should be your next build.
AR-10 & LR-308 Styles
Once you dive into the 308 world, you'll find fewer standardized parts compared to a 223/556 build. Most rifles are going to fall under Armalite's AR-10 or DPMS's LR-308. The look and feel of the DPMS pattern LR-308 is a popular build with a lot of high-quality, compatible parts.
You'll find some compatibility differences when comparing the LR-308 and the AR-10 including parts that are not interchangeable, some of these include the upper receiver, lower receiver, and gas tube. So, keep in mind the style and specific brands you use are going to affect your build more than you might be used to.
